Nothing Like a Good EasternWestern Dish

well, someone from above knew i was struggling with transitioning back into chinese cuisine, knew i was not yet interested in chinese, and knew i missed western, so they made my crossover a little easier.

Last night our good friend invited us to his home for a "Western Dinner!" he was really excited to prepare it for us and spent all day shopping and "cooking."

it turns out, when we finally got there at 730, not 700 (he needed more time) nothing had been done. he said he had been busy "cooking the salad."

He quickly ushered us to his new kitchen table which he flipped and converted to a larger size to accomodate his foreign guests. Then disappeared back into the kitchen to retrieve our appetizer while he continued to "cook the salad."

Our pre dinner snack was the chinese beloved pork floss bread. its all over the place and they love it, consequently, and obviously, we hate it. its always some curiously and almost frighteningly too moist/soft/puffy sweet bread with this strange stringy, "pork floss" attached to it. ugh. we threw it out the window of his 8th floor apartment while he was "cooking the salad" i hate to admit. but desperate times during chinese cuisine call for desperate measures, and i would be lieing if i said it was the first time... i only wish i woulda kept up with this blog when we went through our REAL food trials last year (including viper!).

Eventually he coerced Beth into the role of cook instead of guest, which we all agreed was a much better position for us all to be in. she saved the spaghetti, but the "salad" was already done, out of the wok and into the freezer?

when dinner was served, we had semi normal dishes. a salad, which was half hot, half frozen potatos and carrots, no greens. cut up apple squares, with peanut butter and chocolate, bread with strawberry jam, and noodles. not too bad!

it was cute to see this adult chinese man look at us and ask "is this good western food?!" as he made his peanut butter, chocolate, strawberry jam, mayonnaise, and ketchup sandwhich, before smashing it between his palms.

it was a great night as the rain pounded outside the window (sorry nashville, and cincinnati) and we ate. it was a sorta middle of the road between missing home and taking the full step into chinese food again...

at least it wasn't snake.
