update

The bird, affectionately named "Elephant" by Beth's little sister, made his grand coming out today. After 2 weeks of lovingly and patiently nursing him/her back to health, he/she decided that today was the day he/she would spread his/her wings and fly away. We are going to choose he as the gender from this point on.

I was on the balcony getting laundry off the line when i heard the fluttering and sputtering and he started low, just like an airplane. Two emotions quickly surged through my body. One, panic, he was awkwardly flying directly, and nervously at my face. I ducked. Two, bittersweet reluctance to let him go. I could remember 2 weeks ago when he first came to us, and all those times, watching him eat moldy bread and drink water. Thats all. But, it was time. So, I ducked. And again, he made the mistake of thinking the window behind me was clear open sky. And again, he crashed, head on, and fell to the ground. It all happened so fast. I just dont understand. Yet somehow, sometimes in life, i dont think we are supposed to.

Two more weeks i guess with our little Elephant.

Unfortunately, he's not really that cute...

Here he is. Yep, our new little pet. Most people in china want miniature dogs. But not us. We look at it as one of life's little blessings. He came to us through divine providence of some sort, since his chances of making to our happy apartment were pretty improbable. He had to fly through two sets of windows (which presumably he thought was still just more clear sky) before he smashed into my bedroom window with a thud and a sudden lifeless drop. When i curiously looked out, there he was. Our little dazed, confused, fat, disease carrying city rat. His wing is broken. And since he cant fly, and we are too nervous to pick up an anxious, flapping, disease ridden pigeon, he will stay on our balcony porch for an undetermined amount of time. At least until our favorite little student, Planet, who "loves birds" comes to carry him away. So for now, we see it as being foster parents, for one of natures ugly, more unwanted and always neglected children. And the school says we cant have pets. but what they dont know cant hurt them. suckers.
